Dr. Haris Dzubur, a Chicago native and award-winning optometrist, was recently named Young Optometrist of the Year—a prestigious honor often considered the MVP award of the profession. As the Director of Optometry at OKO Medical Eyecare, Dr. Dzubur is widely regarded as a top dry eye specialist in Chicago, with advanced expertise in specialty contact lenses, myopia control, and medical optometry.
Throughout his career, Dr. Dzubur has examined over 100,000 eyes and brings more than 11 years of clinical experience in meibomian gland probing, a cutting-edge treatment for chronic dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). His results-driven approach has helped countless patients find relief from red, itchy, burning, or watery eyes.

Dr. Dzubur holds a B.A.Sc. in Biological and Physical Sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned his Doctorate of Optometry from the Rosenberg School of Optometry in San Antonio. He completed clinical rotations at the Orlando VA Hospital, Dan and Hoffman Eye Associates in Miami (ocular surface disease), and specialty contact lens training in Ft. Lauderdale under Dr. Kenneth E. Mailer. His training uniquely positions him as a Chicago medical optometrist skilled in managing glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, and more.

As the founder of the OKO Dry Eye Institute, Dr. Dzubur leads one of the region’s most advanced centers for diagnosing and treating dry eye syndrome. He also specializes in fitting custom contact lenses for complex corneal conditions like keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, and post-surgical eyes, as well as multifocal and prosthetic lenses. Additionally, he is a leader in myopia control for children, utilizing proven methods to slow the progression of nearsightedness and preserve long-term vision.

Dr. Dzubur is also an Adjunct Faculty Professor of Optometry at Midwestern University, President of the North Suburban Optometric Association, and a sought-after national speaker on topics like dry eye disease, blepharitis, and ocular allergies. Fluent in Bosnian and Spanish, he offers compassionate, personalized care for patients from all backgrounds.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Dzubur is a devoted husband and father of three children, a board member of a humanitarian nonprofit, and an avid fan of soccer, golf, and family time with his French Bulldog, Duke.

Dr. Luma Mallah is a dedicated pediatric optometrist committed to delivering exceptional, compassionate care to children of all ages and abilities. With advanced training in child eye exams, school vision screenings, and developmental optometry, Dr. Mallah brings a patient-first, heart-led approach to every visit—making her one of Chicago’s rising leaders in kids’ eye care.

As a graduate of Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Optometry, Dr. Mallah has extensive clinical experience managing conditions unique to growing eyes, including myopia (nearsightedness), amblyopia, strabismus, and binocular vision dysfunction. She is passionate about early intervention, offering cutting-edge solutions in myopia control, including orthokeratology, specialty soft lenses, and behavior-based visual hygiene counseling.

During her pediatric clinical rotations, Dr. Mallah focused on:

  • Comprehensive child eye exams for both neurotypical children and those with developmental disabilities
  • Myopia management strategies tailored to each child’s lifestyle and risk profile
  • Vision therapy fundamentals for treating eye teaming and tracking issues

Her research on phoria testing and proper binocular setup has been presented at the American Academy of Optometry, underscoring her commitment to precision in evaluating young visual systems. She is also the recipient of the Gold Key Optometry Award and the Eschenbach Low Vision Excellence Award, celebrating her leadership and dedication to inclusive eye care.

Fluent in both English and Arabic, Dr. Mallah has a unique ability to connect with diverse families. She also serves the community through vision screenings for schoolchildren and athletes, including Special Olympics and the Chicago Blackhawks’ “Back to School” program.

Family Optometry

Dr. John, a dedicated and compassionate optometrist, has devoted 38 years to providing exceptional eye care at Star Vision. As the owner and leading practitioner, he has built a reputation for going above and beyond to ensure the health and well-being of his patients. After nearly four decades of service, Dr. John has announced his decision to retire at the end of September 2023, marking the end of an era for Star Vision as the office prepares for permanent closure.

In anticipation of his retirement, Dr. John is diligently working to transfer patient records to a trusted local eye doctor at OkO Medical Eyecare (www.okoeyes.com). He is thrilled to join Dr. Haris Dzubur's esteemed team at OkO Medical Eyecare, where their shared philosophy of taking the extra step for patients perfectly aligns.
